Our 2022 bear represents a pilot of one of the Spitfires launched from aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean, during the spring of 1942 bound for the besieged island of Malta.
He is wearing a variety of flying clothing available to aircrew at that time in the Mediterranean. His uniform is made of lightweight khaki material and was standard issue for those serving in warmer climates.
The siege of Malta lasted until late autumn, by which time the ever increasing allied air supremacy finally turned the tide against the Axis forces.
On 15 April 1942 the island was awarded the George Cross in honour of the bravery of its people.
